'There' is and 'there are' are used to say that a person or an object exists. Patterns are:
(+)There is a sofa in the living room.
(-) There is not a sofa in living room.
(?) Is there a sofa in the living room?
(+) There are three newspapers on the table.
(-) There are not three newspapers on the table.
(?) Are there three newspapers on the table?
There is + Singular nounExamples:
(+)There is a sofa in the living room.
(-) There is not a sofa in living room.

There are + plural nounExamples:
